Explore the map below to see the events of the Wilmington Ten and better understand the spatial relationship between the different locations.
All of these locations were found through Wilmington Morning Star newspaper articles. Although many of the locations represent fires that occurred during the week of the boycott and were linked to the racial violence in the newspaper, at least one location — Lum's Restaurant — was set on fire by the owner to collect insurance money. It is important to remember that even though the newspapers might have reported a racial connection to the events that took place, it is not always that simple. To complicate the matter further, it is still unknown who set most of these fires. Without a known perpetrator(s) we will never know who set the fires or why. However, it is important to include them because that is the narrative that Wilmington residents saw in the newspapers and influenced how people have thought about these events.
